An Excruciating form of Execution
Crucifixion was a practice that originated with the Persians and was later passed on to the Carthaginians and the Phoenicians. The Romans perfected it as a method of capital punishment, which caused maximum pain and suffering over a significant period of time. In fact, the word "excruciate" (meaning, “to cause great agony, torment”) comes from the Latin for "from, or out of, the cross.”

Jesus Faced a Horrible Death
Crucifixion typically began with a scourging or flogging of the victim’s back. The Romans used a whip called a flagrum, which consisted of small pieces of bone and metal attached to a number of leather strands. The number of blows given to Jesus is not recorded; however, the number of blows in Jewish law was 39 (one less than the 40 called for in the Torah, to prevent a counting error). During the scourging, the skin was ripped from the back, exposing a bloody mass of tissue and bone. Extreme blood loss occurred, often causing death, or at least unconsciousness. In addition to the flogging, Jesus faced severe beating and torment by the Roman soldiers, including the plucking of His beard and the piercing of His scalp with a crown of thorns.

After the flogging, the victim was often forced to carry his own crossbar, or patibulum, to the execution site. The patibulum could easily weigh 100 pounds. In the case of Jesus, the record shows that He may have carried His patibulum the distance of over two football fields. In a weak and tormented state, it’s no wonder the record establishes that Jesus needed a great deal of assistance. Once the victim arrived at the execution site, the patibulum was put on the ground and the victim was forced to lie upon it. Spikes about 7 inches long and 3/8 of an inch in diameter were driven into the wrists. The spikes would hit the area of the median nerve, causing shocks of pain up the arms to the shoulders and neck. Already standing at the crucifixion site would be the 7-foot-tall post, called a stipes. In the center of the stipes was a crude seat to “support” for the victim. The patibulum was then lifted on to the stipes, and the victim’s body was awkwardly turned on the seat so that the feet could be nailed to the stipes. At this point, there was tremendous strain put on the wrists, arms and shoulders, resulting in a dislocation of the shoulder and elbow joints. The position of the nailed body held the victim’s rib cage in a fixed position, which made it extremely difficult to exhale, and impossible to take a full breath. Having suffered from the scourging, the beatings and the walk with the patibulum, Jesus was described as extremely weak and dehydrated. He was probably losing significant amounts of blood. As time passed, the loss of blood and lack of oxygen would cause severe cramps, spasmodic contractions and probably unconsciousness.

Ultimately, the mechanism of death in crucifixion was suffocation. To breathe, the victim was forced to push up on his feet to allow for inflation of the lungs. As the body weakened and pain in the feet and legs became unbearable, the victim was forced to trade breathing for pain and exhaustion. Eventually, the victim would succumb in this way, becoming utterly exhausted or lapsing into unconsciousness so that he could no longer lift his body off the stipes and inflate his lungs. Due to the shallow breathing, the victim’s lungs would begin to collapse in areas, probably causing hypoxia. Due to the loss of blood from the scourging, the victim probably formed a respiratory acidosis, resulting in an increased strain on the heart, which beats faster to compensate. Fluid would also build up in the lungs. Under the stress of hypoxia and acidosis, the heart would eventually fail. There are several different theories on the actual cause of death for Jesus. One theory is that there was a filling of the pericardium with fluid, which put a fatal strain on the ability of His heart to pump blood. Another theory states that Jesus died of cardiac rupture. Another theory is that Jesus' death was “multifactorial and related primarily to hypovolemic shock, exhaustion asphyxia and perhaps acute heart failure.” Regardless of the actual medical cause of final death, the historical record is very clear -- Jesus suffered numerous hours of horrible and sustained torture on the cross of Calvary.

Jesus Suffered for You and Me
The crucifixion accounts of Jesus Christ are in entire agreement with the customs and practices of the Romans in that period. The evidence for Christ’s horrible and painful death is unquestioned by today’s legitimate scholars. The only dispute is the nature and character of the “criminal” Jesus Christ. Look at the record yourself -- Even with all the pain, Jesus thought of others rather than Himself. His first words from the cross were, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). He thought of His mother, who stood by the cross weeping, and asked his beloved disciple John to take care of her. On either side of Jesus were two thieves executed at the same time. When one of them accepted Jesus as Lord, Jesus shared with him, "To day shalt thou be with Me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). Finally, Jesus expressed his complete surrender to the will of God as He said, "It is finished;" (John 19:30). "Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit" (Luke 23:46). Investigate the historical record, and then examine your heart. Jesus gave Himself willingly for you and me. Jesus suffered a horrible death for you and me. Jesus loved us so much that He willingly died in utter shame and pain for our sins. In fact, the Bible teaches us that He who was without sin was literally "made sin" for us. God, in human form, allowed himself to be made sin to save us. On the cross, he bore all the world's sin because of His love. The only way to complete His story of love is to love Him in return.

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body" (2 Cor. 4:8-10).

It's hard to find anyone in Christian history who became a great leader without earning an advanced degree at the University of Adversity. John Bunyan (1628-1688), the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, grew up in poverty and taught himself to read. As a young man, he struggled with feelings of not being forgiven by God and was tortured by visions of eternal punishment. His devout wife helped him to overcome his fear, but then, while she was still in her twenties, she died of a sudden illness. In his grief, Bunyan devoted himself to preaching. The English government, however, repeatedly imprisoned him for preaching without a license.

On one occasion, Bunyan was sentenced to three months in prison, but when he told the officials he intended to go on preaching, his sentence was extended to 12 years. John Bunyan experienced God's presence in a special way while he was in prison. In fact, it was in his cell that he penned his enduring classic, The Pilgrim's Progress. It's a book that could only have been written by a soul that was refined by the fires of adversity.

A. W. Tozer once wrote, "It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until he has hurt him deeply." God has a mission for your life and mine. But before we can carry out that mission, we will often go through the boot camp of adversity. If this is where you find yourself today, ask God to give you His grace to walk through this time with you. He promised He would never leave or forsake us.

In his book, When Heaven Invades Earth, Pastor Bill Johnson makes an insightful observation about Jesus.
"He could not heal the sick. Neither could He deliver the tormented from demons or raise the dead. To believe otherwise is to ignore what he said about Himself, and more importantly, to miss the purpose of His self-imposed restriction to live as a man."

In the Greek language that word nothing has a unique meaning - it means NOTHING, just like it does in English! He had NO supernatural capabilities whatsoever! While He is 100 percent God, He chose to live with the same limitations that man would face once he was redeemed. He made that point over and over again. Jesus became the model for all who would embrace the invitation to invade the impossible in His name. He performed miracles, wonders, and signs, as a man in right relationship to God - not as God.

If He performed miracles because He was God, then they would be unattainable for us. But if he did them as a man, I am responsible to pursue His lifestyle. Recapturing this simple truth changes everything - and makes possible a full restoration of the ministry of Jesus in His Church.

"He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." (John 14:21)

God speaks and manifests Himself to various people throughout the ages. It is Jesus' desire to manifest Himself to the ones who love the Father. It is easy for God to speak to people, but the problem is we don't listen and we don't follow! All Jesus asks is we as the children of God will keep His commandments.

The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre when he was sitting outside of his tent. He then bowed down to the ground as he saw these three men standing by him. In order for God to manifest to us, we must step outside of our tent!
When we step out, God will show up! Many of us hide in the tent and expect God to show up in our cozy and the most comfortable zones. No! Jesus' greatest commandment for us is to love your God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength and body; and love one another. Wanna know when God manifest Himself? Step out first!

Keep His commandments and God will show up in times of need.

"It takes eleven days to go from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir road." (Deuteronomy 1:2)

It should only take approx. 11 days to travel through the desert, but the whole Israelites took 40 years to complete the journey. Why? Because of their disobedience and unbelief, they wandered in the desert and died without inheriting the Promised Land. Throughout the years, the Israelites complained to Moses regardless; in God's eye, they didn't just quarrel against Moses, they indirectly refused God's government. When they had no meat, they wanted to stone Moses, then God provided them meat; after a short while, they hated the taste of quails. Everytime they faced hardships, they began to reminisce about their life in Egypt as slaves.

How often do we back down from hardships? How often do we say to God that Your will be done in life?
That's why Jesus is saying - for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:30) Do we want to stay in the desert and keep learning the same lesson for 40 years because of our disbelief? Or do we want to take up Jesus' yoke and His burden, and walk out of the desert in 11 days?

God's promises never change. Hang on and don't let go.

"He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into the light" (Job 12:22).

One of the great mysteries of the Kingdom is how God uses the darkest times in our lives to reveal greater depths of understanding of His ways. The only way we can receive these deeper things is to be driven to the depths of darkness. It is here that we discover important truths that He plans to use in our lives and the lives of others.

There is a process God uses to draw us into greater levels of intimacy. The first phase involves a depth of soul experience that causes great pain in our lives. We seek God for deliverance from the incredible emotional pain this causes. Our primary motivation for seeking God is to get out of our pain.

During this time, God meets us in the depths of darkness. We discover that He never left us but is in the midst of the darkness. We develop a new relationship with God. Gradually our motivation turns from removal of pain to love and intimacy with God. This is the place our Heavenly Father desires us to be.

During this season God will make spiritual deposits into your life. Others will be making withdrawals in the future from your life as well. You see, God reveals deep things in darkness that will be revealed in the light.

If you find yourself in great distress, know that God will bring your deep shadows into the light. The key to your deliverance is becoming satisfied in God. He becomes your all. He is your life. You will know your deliverance is near when your circumstances simply don't matter to you anymore.

Love the Lord your God with all your soul and see what things He will show you in the deep things of darkness.

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:12-13)

God creates everyone of us differently to fulfill the work of His Son, Christ Jesus. It's not about us; it's ALL about the King and His business. It's NOT about the 5 fold ministry, but it's about the equipping of the saints. God calls some of us to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to train those who can be faithfully teaching others. It's not God's plan to categorize our callings or offices, but it's His heart that EVERY saints can be empowered to edify the body of Christ.

We've just started our School of Disciples today; I have been struggling about this training school, because I know that I am not the teacher type of leader. However if this is from God, I will set forth and be led by the Holy Spirit, because it's all about the empowering of the saints. I believe that through this training, we will see teachers, pastors, prophets, apostles and evangelists being raised up to continue equipping the next generation.

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness'"
(2 Cor 12:9).

If there is one thing that is consistent throughout scripture, it is this: God calls people when they are not ready. God will never call you into service when you think you are ready. This is intentional on God's part.

When God calls, you will most likely be in the most unlikely circumstances to receive that call. You will be in the midst of a crisis, you will lack resources, you will not have the skills you think you need. This too is the way of God.
God does this because He wants you to know your call is only based on His ability, not yours. When you think it is based on you, this is a false humility. And, it is unbelief and disobedience on your part.

We were not ready when the doctor told us the negative report on baby Austen; but I know that He is forever gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. Through the hardship, we know that His grace is always sufficient.

The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children (Ex 12:37-38).

How does God prepare someone for big assignments? Consider the mission given to Moses. He was called to deliver an entire nation from slavery. The assignment was to bring six hundred thousand men, on foot, out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. In addition, there were the women and children. Who is up for this big assignment? How can we get ready for assignment that big?

God prepared Moses by allowing him to grow up under the ways of Egypt. He learned their customs, their idols, and was a favored son of Pharaoh until God revealed his birthright. He began to realize God had placed him in the court of Pharaoh but realized he was not one of them. He then was being called back to his own people. He tried to deliver his people using the ways of Egypt. This was not God's way. So, God banished him to the land of Midian for additional training.

Moses learned while living in the dry land moving sheep around to places where water and grass could be found. The desert was a place of preparation for one of the greatest assignments given to one man. Did you hear what I just said? Yes, the desert was the place of preparation.

What kind of assignment is God preparing you for? Does He have you in the desert of preparation? Learn well the lessons you are there to learn. You may find you are called to be a deliverer, just like Moses.

Jesus answered: Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?'" (John 14:9).

The disciples had been with Jesus for three years. They'd seen miracles - dead men came back to life, the sick were healed, and water was turned to wine. These were but a few of the hundreds of miracles they saw Jesus perform. However, even after these experiences, they lacked one important thing - intimacy with Jesus. They didn't really know Jesus.

This is a challenge to my own walk with God. It is easy for me to fall into this trap of working so hard for Jesus that I forget to walk with Jesus. Jesus desires intimacy more than works.

He tells us in John 15:5: "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned." Whatever works we do must be a fruit of our intimacy with Him.

Lord, help us not to just know about You. We desire to know You. Amen.

All your children shall be taught by the LORD, And great shall be the peace of your children.
In righteousness you shall be established; You shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; and from terror, for it shall not come near you. (Isaiah 54:13-14)

As I sat there listening to the ultra sound specialist giving us all the negative report of our baby, my heart dropped into a dark pit where seemed no hope and it was full of fear. When there seems to be no way, God makes a way for His people.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (2 Cor. 12:9) The word “grace” is found in the Bible 159 times. God repeatedly confirms His love to His children. You might feel the stress like a tsunami coming at you, but you should not lose hope; for when you are weak, then you are strong. (2 Cor. 12:10)

God never leads us into a jungle full of adversity without giving us weapons to overcome the afflictions. Before we can take down the Goliath, we must learn how to kill lions and bears. It's a process to a spiritual victory in our Christian walk. God is faithful and He will never give you loads that you can't bear; His grace is sufficient for you.

"So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. His wife said to him, 'Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!'" (Job 2:7-9).

When faith doesn't see results it challenges what we believe. We must pray as Job prayed: "Teach me what I cannot see" (Job 34:32). God says there is a purpose in everything we go through.

God is going to reveal things to you through this season of adversity that you would never receive had you not gone through this. This is part of your calling even though Satan is the instrument. God is always bigger than Satan's afflictions.
Our greatest tests come when we cannot see positive results from our faith and obedience. In such cases we must die to our expectations and entrust them to our Lord.

1) Two guys were debating with Eddie on the issue of homosexuality and marriage. At the end of the discussion, both guys came up to Eddie and thanked him for doing this. One guy, a student, said, "Eddie, I was a Christian before I entered UCR. I lost faith after I started going to this school, but after having that talk with you I felt like I found God again. Thank you."

2) Me and Crystal were holding the sign that says "Free Prayer". A guy named Chris came up to us and asked for prayer. We prayed for him and tears streamed down his face. He told us he doesn't go to UCR, but his girlfriend does. They are both Christians and are not facing financial difficulties together. God used us to give him words of encouragement, edification and comfort. Praise the Lord!

3) Eddie prophesied over one of Brynn's friend, gave her word of knowledge that was exactly what she needed to hear. She was having a difficult time teaching her children and felt much discouragement, Eddie said to her, "The Lord's word for you is that you are a great mom." She was extremely encouraged and blessed by the words.

4) Jasmine, my friend who's got a crazy gift of discernment, asked me to go pray for this one girl. I went up to her and I felt much heartache, so after praying for her I asked her if she's sad or depressed. She said yes, and so I gave her some comforting words and God's promises for her. She was really touched and thankful. Hallelujah!... I know there's a lot more that I don't know about... but PRAISE THE LORD!!!! =D

That got me thinking about going to the "front line" where the action should be.At the city hall, we are very much "protected"; if we want more "impact" we should go over to the voting booth and face the protesters, right?...

...We met in several bars and pubs, in a restaurant and on a hotel rooftop lounge area – places like Dublin Square Irish Pub, Hard Rock Café, Buca di Beppo Restaurant, etc. Some encouraging responses included unusual interest from the early prep staff which led to interaction with them after our prayer time. On the hotel rooftop a hotel guest moved her chair almost into our circle and just took it all in. She said "it just made my day” to listen to the worship and prayer...

Jones spoke of a process that would take place to separate the nations of the earth as either sheep or goat nations. “Sheep nations” were those, who like the great city of Ninevah, would willingly come to the Lord. Bob gave the example of Fiji, a nation that was dedicated to the Lord on a national level in one day in the year 2000. “Goat nations” represented those nations who have turned away from the Lord and would come under His judgment...

After dinner he was stretching and cracking his ankles, and when we hung out in his room he said that his ankle started hurting a lot.I looked at it and it was swelling and red ! He said if he put pressure on it when standing it hurt. So we prayed in faith asking Jesus to heal Howie's ankle completely. After hearing it felt a little better, we continued to pray...

...Then when it was time for Starbucks to close, there were only me, Momo, the girl with wrist brace, her friend, and another man in the store. I went up to the girl and asked her what happened to her wrist, and she said she was in a car accident and her bone fractured. I told her that Jesus can heal her and I've seen many times when God heals a person right at the spot. She generously accepted the prayer offer and after I prayed for her, I told her how much Jesus loves her and cares about her. Her eyes were red. Her friend's actually been trying to bring her to Christ for a long time and he's very happy to see that I went up and told her all these. She's definitely touched by God's love and healing power, because all her pain has been GONE! She took the brace off and tested it too!! There were completely NO PAIN! ...

She kindly accepted it and after a short prayer we asked her how she's feeling. She told us, "I feel so warm in both wrists and all the pain that's been bothering for months is GONE!!" But, she still couldn't straighten up her fingers so we prayed again. She said, "Wow my fingers are already loosening up!!" She could move her fingers more than before!! Hallelujah!!...

...A group of us went to the mall to find some people that God wanted to love on. It didn't take very long to find some. We saw a woman in a wheelchair coming out of the elevator so we began to look for an opportune moment. After following them for a minute another lady turned stopped and turned around revealing to me that she had a boot on her right foot. I asked her what was going on and she said she had tendinitis in her foot. We prayed for her for just a moment and she felt God touching it. She didn't really want to test it out at the moment though. However, later another group found her and asked how she was doing and she realized that she no longer had any pain!...

...Julia spotted a limping lady trying to walk to the bus stop; she went up and prayed for her, the lady got better then Andy walked over to her and offered more prayers. At the end, she started running and dancing and jumping to the street corner and back; they were all shouting "Hallelujah" at the bus stop under 110 degree weather in Vegas. The lady was going to go to a prayer meeting called "dunamis" hoping to get healed but she was extremely late for the meeting. Little did she know, the "dunamis" came to her at the bus stop.
Isn't God good or what?...

...We went on and saw an old grandma on wheelchair with a lady pushing her. They are originally from the Philippines, and they are Catholics. Grandma can walk a bit, but not really long distance because she has a pacemaker; moreover she has arthritis on both of her knees, and her right knee was hurting. So we prayed for her, and then after the prayer, she was like..."there's no pain!" ....and she started to move her leg and bend and stretch and bend and stretch.... with no pain at all!...[click the link for more]

...After school, we headed to the Library with a white a foam board that says “Can we PRAY for you?” in bright orange letters. “PRAY” was in red so no one could miss it. Before of minute of settling down trying to look cool and casual under the tree with a big sign, a girl named Tiffany came up to us and asked, “Are you serious?” HAHA! People kept asking us why and what we’re doing it for. Leni and I just replied, “We do it for you because Jesus he loves you.” In about an hour, we managed to pray for at LEAST 15 people and get rejected by 2. Crying Out At Pasadena's Abortion Clinic
...So we had two big signs: “God Loves You and Your Baby” and “Inside You Is A Miracle of Life”, we put red tape with the word “LIFE” written in black on our mouths, and we prayed.
Then we saw a young girl walking towards the clinic entrance, Sarah immediately torn off her tape (ouch!) and walked to her. This girl found out she was pregnant and wanted an abortion, but after Sarah talked to her and prayed for her, she decided not to abort her baby and left! HALLELUJAH GOD SAVED A LIFE!!!!!! And soon Shin joined us, put on the tape, and held up the sign (she’s amazing, she stood there in the blazing sun for soo long and never sat down! Healing Miracle - 05/20/08

muscular atrophy started to walk!!
yesterday at school, i prayed for a girl who was born with muscular atrophy. she has no muscle on both of her lower legs. there were two casts on her legs and she use two crutches to walk.the first time i prayed, we both felt the strong heat on her legs. she was surprised,didn't know what was happening. i told her it's God, He loves to heal you. so i prayed again. i asked her to stand up and try to walk a little bit. i held her up, holding both her hands. she couldn't believe she stood up and started walking...(still in shock). i let her go, "try to walk by yourself" ..she was walking fine !!"i have never walk more than 2 steps before!"yesterday,after the prayer she walked at least 7-8 steps!!!Praise Jesus~~~~~!!awesome creative miracles starting to take place at PCC!!

Treasure Hunt
The highlight of the day: On our "treasure hunt" list we wrote, "purple shirt", "20+ woman", "Asian woman with marriage issue" and "books". And guess what?? You know it! We found all these items on TWO woman in Barns & Nobles!! xD It's totally crazy!! Actually one of them called the number on IMPACT card, and I've been hanging out/talking on the phone with her for several times now. We're hanging out again next week too!! Her name is Kat, and she's got an offer from HARVARD! She's currently going to USC for grad. school. (went to UCLA for undergrad.) This girl is super smart I tell you. She's Japanese and she's a believer!! You don't see that too often. At least in my case. Praise the Lord, He has been using me to give her useful insights and they really helped her out. She said she's going to church more and more often, and also praying more and more often now.
